She's one of the most recognizable faces in American politics, a headline magnet whose every move sparks commentary across the aisle: Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-D). But her fiancé? Unless you've been on the campaign trail with her, chances are you've never heard of him.

And that's exactly how Riley Roberts seems to like it. He's been described as a quiet presence, a behind-the-scenes supporter, and even mistaken for a volunteer. But for over a decade — on and off — he's also been the man by AOC's side. So, who is Riley Roberts, and how did he end up engaged to the most talked-about congresswoman in the country?

From 'S--t Starter' to Steady Hand

Riley Roberts, a soft-spoken Arizona native with a background in marketing and web development, isn't your typical political spouse. He and Ocasio-Cortez met back in their Boston University days at a student debate forum called "Coffee & Conversations," where classmates say sparks flew over caffeine and foreign policy, PEOPLE reports.

In the biography "Take Up Space: The Unprecedented AOC," Eric Baker, a friend of AOC, described Roberts as a man who loves to challenge conventional wisdom, appealing to AOC's sharp intellect and passion for big ideas. "Riley was, for lack of a better term, the s--t starter. Riley's just as smart as anyone you've ever met, probably smarter, but he would actively say things just to stir the pot," Baker said, as reported by Cosmopolitan.

In a quote cited by PEOPLE, Baker added, "He enjoyed intellectual combat and I think she enjoyed his pushback."

The two began dating during college, broke up after graduation — with Roberts returning to Arizona — and then reconnected a few years later. By 2015, they were back together, and Roberts had moved to New York to be closer to her, reportedly working out of their Bronx apartment while helping launch websites and grow startups.

A Proposal With a Twist

The couple got engaged in April 2022 during a trip to AOC's family's hometown in Puerto Rico. But the path to that moment wasn't exactly a rom-com montage. Roberts apparently told her early in the year that he hoped to propose before the end of 2022. Her response, according to an interview with GQ: "Oh, really? Well, you're going to have to woo me. You're going to have to convince me, after all this time, why I should."

Partly, AOC's hesitation reportedly stemmed from worries around issues of identity surrounding an interracial relationship. However, she also worried that Roberts might not want the intensity of being with a highly successful woman, noting that many men struggle with that kind of commitment. In the GQ interview, AOC shared her perspective on how many men behave: "The moment you start being yourself, they kind of freak out. I think it causes a conflict within them that they didn't even anticipate. It's not even a deception. It's just, they uncover insecurities that they didn't know were there."

But Roberts didn't blink. Far from it. He dove in — supporting her and growing alongside her.

That was enough.

What We Know (And Don't Know) About Riley Roberts

Roberts isn't interested in the spotlight and tends to avoid it whenever he can; he mostly avoids cameras and rarely appears on AOC's social media.

His preference for privacy extends even to those closest to the couple; some friends didn't even know the two were dating until well after graduation.

Roberts' resume is modest and mostly scrubbed from the internet. He once worked as a UX growth consultant and lent his marketing skills to startups. One now-deleted LinkedIn profile described his knack for growing subscription services using Facebook ads and conversion-rate optimization.

People close to the couple say Roberts plays an essential role in AOC's life — emotionally, strategically, and practically. When she's at work late, he's often there. When security concerns intensified, he became a constant presence and quiet protector. Their dog, Deco, rounds out the tight-knit household.

That support hasn't gone unnoticed by her family, either. Blanca Ocasio-Cortez, AOC's mother, practically gushed about the man to the Daily Mail in 2019: "I love him. He is the most loving, supporting person I've seen. He helped her tremendously during the election. They've been together for four years now, after they reconnected from a college breakup."

Still Low-Key, Even After the Ring

Since the engagement, there's been no public wedding date, no splashy photo shoots, and no political rebranding to include Roberts more prominently. The couple seems content to keep things quiet — even in a world that's anything but.

Love stories in Washington rarely stay low-profile. This one might be the rare exception.
